Best Cold Plunge Tubs (2026): Plunge vs Ice Barrel vs Renu, Specs and Running Costs

By

Short answer: if you want one box that plugs into a wall and stays at temperature, the Plunge All-In ($7,990 on sale) is the most complete package. If you want the lowest price for a tub plus a real chiller, the Ice Barrel 500 + Chiller bundle ($5,749.98) costs about $2,240 less, sits upright in a smaller footprint, and carries a lifetime warranty on the barrel. Renu's Cold Stoic tubs cost more but publish the clearest energy numbers we found: about 120–130 W average while cooling, or roughly $16–$17 a month at the U.S. average electricity rate. Sun Home's inflatable plunge is the cheapest option here with a chiller that also heats ($3,999). All of these run on a standard 120V outlet, ideally on a dedicated 15A GFCI circuit.

Model deep dives

Plunge All-In (Gen 2)

Best for: buyers who want a single unit that's delivered inside, filled with a hose, plugged in, and controlled from a phone.

Trade-offs: the shortest warranty among the built-in tubs here, and the biggest footprint. At 1,150 lb full, check floor loading before putting it on an upper-floor deck.

Other Plunge options, if the All-In is more than you need: The Plunge (original acrylic lay-down tub with the Pro Chiller, $8,490 cold-only) and Plunge Air (inflatable tub with the Pro Chiller, $5,490 cold-only). Plunge rates the Pro Chiller to 37°F.

Ice Barrel 500 + Chiller

Best for: buyers who want a seated, upright plunge in a small footprint and a lower price than the all-in-one tubs.

Trade-offs: it's a two-piece setup with hoses between barrel and chiller, and the chiller is cold-only. Ice Barrel doesn't publish average power draw, so running cost is an estimate (see electricity cost).

Ice Barrel 300

Best for: buyers who want to start with ice, or live somewhere cold, and add a chiller later.

Trade-offs: without a chiller you're buying and hauling ice, and water temperature drifts with the weather.

Renu Therapy Cold Stoic 2.0 and 3.0

Best for: buyers who want a furniture-style tub with a wood or composite deck, a 5-year warranty, and published energy figures.

Trade-offs: the most expensive tubs here, and the 2.0's 0.25 HP chiller is the smallest in this group, so expect slower pull-down after a refill.

Sun Home Cold Plunge (Horizontal and Vertical)

Best for: renters, movers, and anyone who wants cold and warm water from one chiller at the lowest price here.

Trade-offs: an inflatable tub won't feel or last like a rigid one, the warranty terms are vague on the product page, and the 40°F minimum ambient limits winter use outdoors in cold climates.

Cold plunge electricity cost

Monthly cost = average watts × 24 hours × 30.4 days ÷ 1,000 × your electricity rate. We use the U.S. average residential price of 18.31¢/kWh (EIA, July 2026). Your utility bill shows your actual rate.

Renu figures come from Renu's specifications page. Plunge, Ice Barrel and Sun Home don't publish average consumption, so the "illustration" rows show how run time changes the bill; they are not measurements of those products. Heating mode costs more: Renu lists 260 W average for the Cold Stoic 3.0 when heating.

What raises run time: hot or sunny locations, leaving the lid off, frequent use, a low set temperature, and refilling with warm water. What lowers it: shade, an insulated cover, a well-insulated tub, and a set point a few degrees warmer than the minimum. If you use ice instead of a chiller, the running cost is the ice itself, which adds up quickly for daily use.

FAQ

Can a cold plunge run on a regular outlet?

Yes. Every model here uses a standard 120V plug. Plunge, Renu (Cold Stoic 3.0) and Sun Home want it on a dedicated 15A circuit with GFCI protection, meaning nothing else runs on that breaker.

How much does it cost to run a cold plunge each month?

Using Renu's published averages, about $16–$17 a month at the U.S. average rate of 18.31¢/kWh. Other brands don't publish averages; a ~500 W chiller running 4 to 12 hours a day works out to about $11–$33 a month.

Plunge or Ice Barrel?

Plunge All-In for a lay-down tub, optional heat and in-home delivery. Ice Barrel 500 + Chiller for about $2,240 less, an upright seat, a smaller footprint and a lifetime barrel warranty.

Ice Barrel or Renu?

Ice Barrel if price and footprint matter most. Renu if you want an integrated lay-down tub with a furniture-style deck and a 5-year warranty on the whole unit.

Do I need a chiller?

Not to start. Ice Barrel's barrels work with ice, and they have chiller ports so you can add one later. A chiller removes the need to buy and carry ice and holds a set temperature.

Can I keep a cold plunge outside in winter?

It depends on the chiller. Sun Home's needs ambient air above 40°F. Check each manufacturer's winterizing instructions before freezing weather.

Will a cold plunge fit through my door?

Ice Barrel says its barrels fit through standard 31" doors. Measure doorways, halls and turns against the exterior dimensions in the table before ordering a rigid tub.

How often do I change the water?

Ice Barrel suggests about every four weeks. Tubs with ozone and filtration can go longer if you follow the maker's water-care routine.
